Medical Disclaimer
A note on what The Serene Ring is, what it isn't, and when to seek professional support.
The Serene Ring is not a medical device
The Serene Ring is a consumer accessory designed to provide a tactile outlet for restless hands. It is not regulated as a medical device by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or any other regulatory body, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, disorder, or medical condition.
What we mean by “Habit Reversal Training”
Habit Reversal Training (HRT) is a behavioral approach used by clinicians to support people with Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) such as nail picking, skin picking, and hair pulling. The Serene Ring is designed to function as one possible competing response — one of the components used in HRT. It is not a substitute for therapy, professional behavioral treatment, or medication prescribed by a healthcare provider.
When to seek professional support
If your nail picking, skin picking, or related behavior:
- causes you significant emotional distress or shame,
- has resulted in skin infection, bleeding, or other physical harm,
- interferes with your daily functioning, work, or relationships, or
- is accompanied by symptoms of anxiety, depression, OCD, or another mental health condition,
please reach out to a qualified mental health professional or your primary healthcare provider. The TLC Foundation for BFRBs (bfrb.org) maintains a directory of clinicians trained in HRT and Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment (ComB).
